Painted faces of Aboriginal dance troupe
SOME MEMBERS OF AN ABORIGINAL DANCE TROUPE.

The girls came from Waratah Technology High School (Newcastle, NSW). The members of the troupe, known as Waratah Technology High Koori Group, were not all Aborigines but they performed Aboriginal dances at public events.

The photo was taken by me during the 1995 Multicultural Fiesta in Hamilton, when dance groups from many ethnic backgrounds performed publicly. And the Koori group performed barefoot, which was, for me, an added bonus.
Nazi propaganda girls tied posts

GERMAN WARTIME PROPAGANDA.

During World War 2 the German propaganda machine turned out various forms of propaganda. One came in the shape of sets of cards, a bit like postcards, that had various anti-Allied images on them. On the rear of each card was a short blurb pushing whatever point was being made.

This particular card was suggesting British soldiers (drawn insultingly like monkeys) would not hesitate to use women as human shields.

A good excuse as any I guess to indulge in a typical bondage aficionado's fantasy of nude bound women tied to posts.

I have been unable to discover how the sets of cards, which were in envelopes, were distributed.

girls in silver crowns costumes

BIZARRE ROCK EISTEDDFOD COSTUMES.

Photo taken in Newcastle, NSW (Australia), around 1997.  The girls wore heavy makeup, with lots of purple and silver.  The final effect was, well, somewhat bizarre.  And some of the girls had painted their toenails purple (they were barefoot), which added to the rather outlandish effect.

Unfortunately I have no other details recorded.
Graphic book depicts sex slavery

AN ALARMING ACCOUNT OF THE TRADE IN WHITE SLAVES (well, maybe, maybe not)!

A fascinating book I came across some years back. It was produced in Lahore, then part of the greater undivided India, now in Pakistan. The book is heavy on alarm but light on real facts. And the title is a little misleading. It does not deal specifically with what is termed 'white' (or 'yellow') slavery but with prostitution by females, whether they are willing or unwilling.

I have been unable to determine the date but this it was probably produced around the late 1930s. The anonymous author writes:

'We warn the guardians not to give so much of liberty to their girls, not to initiate them to the luxuries or comforts of life which alone bring about moral laxity, not to allow them to visit so freely the picture-houses, dancing-halls, operas, theatres or other places of recreation, not to send them on a journey by rail without any proper escort, not to entrust them so blindly to the care of spiritual fathers, nor to allow them to mix so freely with young men or to attend mixed clubs or go out alone on any pretext whatever.'

The reference to 'care of spiritual fathers' refers to a section of the book which examines some nefarious activities of religious gurus who use their 'spiritual' state to entice young women into their webs. (Sounds awfully familiar!)

PS: Unfortunately there are no more titillating illustrations, just this one on the front cover.
Sutherland Baton-Twirlers

BATON-TWIRLERS IN BLUE.

A group of baton-twirler girls have a chat as they wait to take part in the annual St Patrick's Day march in Sydney - held near Hyde Park - in 1991.

The Irish-Australian marchers have some wonderfully colourful costumes, especially the girls who dance - a huge attraction for any photographer.

Saint Patrick is always associated with Christianity in Ireland but the Christian faith was already there before Patrick arrived.

THE JOY OF STEAM TRAINS.

Faces of two girls in crowd

FACES IN THE CROWD.

Caught these two happy young girls at the Sydney Royal Easter Show some years ago but unsure of date. Possibly around 1991 or 1992.

It is fun trying to record the spontaneity of an unguarded moment, if a bit cheeky. But when one of the girls spotted me taking the photo she kindly gave me a sweet smile.  Maybe one day the girls will come across this photo. Of course, they will no longer be girls; if my dating is correct they are probably now aged around 30 or so, perhaps married with their own children.

Mother and girls - music and dance

MUSIC AND DANCE.

Another beautiful old postcard although this one is monochrome (black-and-white). It was part of a set of six featuring the two young girls engaged in playing music and dancing. It was produced in France in the year 1921.
Map of Africa in year 1500

MAP OF AFRICA IN THE YEAR 1500.

The map appears to be associated with Christopher Columbus through a Juan de la Cosa.

I wonder if there was already a little industry working away in Nigeria to extract money from unwary travellers or missionaries. 'I have an uncle who was a chief of his village and was deposed but before he was driven from the area he revealed to me the whereabouts of a huge hoard of gold.  Now I just need some person of goodwill to assist me transferring this gold from the country.'

Bare-breasted French woman

THE BEAUTY OF THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES.

While I am quite comfortable with nude humans, whether male or female, I really can see little beauty in the male body, but women - now there is a very different story.

What gorgeous creatures they are! From the top of their head to the tips of their toes. Especially their toes!

Some strange people seem to be uncomfortable with women's bodies, even shapely breasts.  They do all they can to hide them. Thus we get those awful blurs and bars across beautiful breasts on so many TV shows and movies, or else the filming is done with extreme cunning. Not even the tiniest glimpse of a nipple is permissible. Remember those bad times when performers had to wear stupid pasties on their nipples? Why on earth?

Apparently some people found nipples to be especially terrifying. And some still do, especially Americans. Unfortunately with so much of our canned entertainment coming across the Pacific from the land of churches we have to put up with the nonsensical approach to nudity.

And don't dare even think about showing the public region! This terrifies some people even more than breasts. Why, not so many years back the Japanese employed an army of diligent workmen on the task of obliterating any show of pubic hair from photographs in magazines entering their country. I think they eventually got some sense and stopped this ludicrous practice.

The world is sure a mad place at times!
Tasered girl

UNRULY 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL HANDCUFFED AND TASERED.

They don't mess around over in the States.  When the 10-year-old daughter of Kelly King (the daughter's name has been suppressed) refused to take a shower her mom called in the cops.

An officer of the Ozarks Police Force tried hard to calm the girl down but with little success. After the girl kicked the policeman he was told by her mom to taser her if he needed to do so. As he tried to handcuff the resisting child he did just that - administering a brief shock to her back. Now handcuffed the girl refused to walk to the cop's car and had to be carried to it.

The policeman was later reprimanded, not for the tasering per se but for failing to use the camera that was supposed to record such events.

Call 911 for difficult kids! (And, this is a true story!)
Singing Earth - gold detecting

GO FIND SOME GOLD?

I have just one copy of this secondhand book in stock - combines travel, adventure, autobiography and the search for gold - in the interior of the Australian continent.

By Agnes McRae.

Mimosa Press Publishers (Australia), paperback (stiff pictorial card), 1987, 150 pages, illustrated, with map in pocket. But adds: 'When the beautiful metal turns up, however, the effort, slog and monotony are immediately forgotten. The fever is on!' Light wear, fairly good complete with map of her travels. ISBN 0947200002. Cat nr 8727 -  $A52 including shipping within Australia (rest of world $A65.).

Girls at swimming carnival

AT A SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

Some of the girls waiting to take part in races at their school swimming carnival.

Taken by me in Newcastle, NSW, in February 1994.  I was particularly struck by the way the girls' figures were placed in the frame. Definitely not organized by me - just happened spontaneously and I reacted quickly.
Barefoot girl stealing apple

STEALING FRUIT - 1.

Another series of beautiful old postcards - several scenes of small girl climbing on wall to get hold of some fruit (looks like an apple).

Date unknown but probably in 1920s. Hand-coloured.
Barefoot girl eating apple

Another series of beautiful old postcards - several scenes of small girl climbing on wall to get hold of some fruit (looks like an apple).

Date unknown but probably in 1920s. Hand-coloured.
Russian youth learning to use guns

RUSSIAN YOUTHS TRAINING WITH GUNS.

A photo published in 1933, showing a group of teenage boys and girls, described as 'young athletes', learning to play a game called 'Preparing for Defence' using wooden guns.

No wonder the Russians fought so savagely when the Germans invaded!  They were obviously well prepared to defend Mother Russia.

Girls playing in water

GIRLS PLAYING IN ROCK POOL.

Date uncertain. Taken around 1992 or 1993 in a rock pool at Newcastle, NSW.  There were several beaches and pools around Newcastle which provided numerous opportunities to take photos.

Two girls in surf

TWO YOUNG WATERBABIES.

Another nice photo taken at the seaside. Unlike many kids these two girls were happy to respond to the camera. Taken at Newcastle, NSW,  around 1992. Thank you girls - if you see yourself (you are probably in your late 20s now.
Priest attacking woman with knife

ANTI-CATHOLIC PROPAGANDA.

One of a number of coloured engravings in a book about the persecution of Protestants by Catholics in Europe. The book was produced in the first half of the 19th century although the original image possibly dated back to an earlier era.

The image depicts a priestly figure about to plunge a knife into the heart of a Waldenses maiden. The Waldenses were a sect that arose in the south of France around the 12th century. They were not rebels against the Catholic Church as were several other bodies, their chief fault being the habit of conducting preachings without ecclesiastical sanction.

When persecution broke out against the 'Protestant' sects the Waldenses, unfortunately for their wellbeing, got lumped in with the other sects and were treated as outcasts. With the coming of the Reformation in the 16th century the Waldenses sided with the reformers and as a result were persecuted with great cruelty.

The remnant descendants of the group are now known as the Vaudois.

Rooftops in Newtown
ROOFTOPS IN NEWTOWN.

Rooftops in Newtown (NSW). Photo taken from a window in the residence above the bookshop I operated in Newtown from 1986 to 1990. I have fond memories of my days in Newtown. The suburb was peopled by a fascinating assortment of characters, ranging from university students through to business-people engaged in all manner of business, sometimes perhaps a little 'shady'. My daughter and I once went to dine at an odd ethnic restaurant in Newtown. It was a most peculiar experience. We finally decided the restaurant was a mere front and something else was going on. Maybe drugs? Who knows? But they seemed very reluctant to serve us. It was with pleasure we finally extracted ourselves from the place - bodies intact.
