Two laughing girls

LAUGHTER AT THE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

These two happy kids spent much of the time at their swimming carnival sharing jokes and enjoying each other's company. The swimming races themselves were of secondary interest. Taken in Newcastle in 1994.

I have to say I am sympathetic. I disliked sport of any kind when I was at school and found such carnivals thoroughly boring. Yes, I know, I'm odd man out, especially as Australians are so hooked on sport.

See how some of the girls found a way to relieve their boredom (further down page).

Church collections

KEEPING THE FUNDS FLOWING

I guess it is no laughing matter to church treasurers but I was rather amused by this advertisement in a US magazine many years back.

Certainly the Church Envelope Co. provides a cornucopia of ways and means to extract donations from the pockets of the faithful. Envelopes, pledge cards, books and boxes, and a quarterly magazine to add words of encouragement to all.

But what amused me most of all was the name on the sample collection box - Paywell Church.

Barefoot Peta protester

THREE GOOD REASONS TO SUPPORT PETA

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), an organization that has two million members worldwide, is active on many fronts, working to help alleviate suffering by animals in various fields.

PETA's website says the organization focuses on four areas where animals suffer the most intensely for the longest period of time - on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. While I have not felt impelled to give up eating meat myself I have from time to time, through letters and comments on my own website, attacked such practices as keeping four or five laying hens in tiny cages and factory farms generally. And I have always been appalled at people who unthinkingly abandon domestic dogs and cats in bushland. And too, I have always opposed any form of experimentation on animals. Vivisection is a very dirty word in my view. Now we have a new possibility to face - transplanting organs from live pigs and other animals to humans.

On the positive side, the lovely PETA maidens delight us by appearing from time to time in public demonstrations, often naked or near-naked and usually barefoot.
Girls playing tying-up game

GIRLS PLAYING TYING-UP GAME

Some of the girls at the swimming carnival (above) found a way to relieve their boredom. They played a tying-up game.

I remember playing such games when I was young. I think boys are more likely to play tying-up than girls.  Sometimes tragedies occur and boys are reported as having hanged themselves while 'playing with ropes.' I suspect, though, that in many such cases a bit more is involved than a game gone wrong.

As I recall things these girls were quite oblivious of the swimming races going on all the while!

Young Australian Voter

YOUNG AUSTRALIA VOTES?

A curious postcard I came across years ago.  Unfortunately there were no other details but someone was evidently keen on pushing a political message. What, however, was the message, I wonder? The placard around the little girl's neck reads, 'Young Australia Votes'.  But maybe it was not intended as a political statement but the photographer was just having a little fun!

Black Smoke - Zig-Zag Railway
THE GREAT ZIG-ZAG RAILWAY IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS.

Currently in my secondhand book stock I have one copy of this book about a historic Australian railway.

I remember taking my children for a ride on this fascinating train when they were quite young.

BLACK SMOKE BLUE MOUNTAINS. The Great Zig-Zag Railway.

By James Bentley.

Robert Brown & Associates (Australia), A4+ hardcover, 1988, 177 pages, illustrated.  A beautiful book describing and illustrating the famous zig-zag railway that climbs into the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. Lavishly illustrated with many photos, including some in colour, together with charts, lists and diagrammatic maps. The book is in excellent condition with one minor corner bump and very slight loss of colour on one edge. Excellent spine lettering and cover decoration. The dust-jacket is, however, a bit damaged with a couple of repaired tears and creases. ISBN 0949267589.  Cat nr 18354 -  $A42 including shipping within Australia (rest of world $A80 - it is a heavy book.).

Are yu saved? advertisement

ARE YOU SAVED?

Evangelists have been with us for years. This was an advertisement in an English religious journal, The Mission Band Lamp, in 1888.

In my Christian days (I'm an atheist now) many years ago I used to work with another Christian young man who was forever bailing people up and asking them, 'Are you saved?'  I was not as forthcoming with my faith as he was and I secretly admired his bravery. He was (as they say) 'witnessing for his faith'.

Alas, though, the same young man's working life did not live up to his enthusiastic words. Eventually the company tired of his poor work and he was sacked ('let go' if you prefer the euphemism).  Not good!

School fete wall signs

WALL SIGNS ADVERTISING SCHOOL FETE

Advertising wall signs designed by students for a school fete - held at St Catherine's School, Waverley (NSW) in 1990. A bit of creativity on the part of some of the girls.

Like swimming carnivals, fetes and similar functions provide some great opportunities for photos. I took a large number of photos at this particular fete. See below for one of the shots.
Postcard - boy on pottie

FASCINATION WITH BUTTOCKS & ACTIVITIES THEREOF

A bunch of French academics have produced a profound study (we assume it is profound) of the human buttocks - Les fesses in Frenchie-talk.  As a result of their earnest researches and prognostications they have published a video and a book. Titled La Face Cachee Des Fesses (The Hidden Side Of The Bottom) the project goes into many aspects of the buttocks - physically, psychologically and socially.

Frankly, I find the buttocks the least interesting and/or likeable of any part of the human body, even Kylie Minogue's famous posterior. But, as I always say - 'whatever turns you on'. Certainly the buttocks is a part of the body that turns on many folk.

Alan Rothschild, who co-directed the video, comments: 'We [the French] have a special relationship with this part of the body. [The buttocks] are 'on billboards, in pharmacy windows everywhere.' But, he adds, 'Only a few years ago large ones were in fashion. Now they must be small, almost androgynous; there's almost no difference between male and female. It's rather a shame.'

Many Japanese men go further and are quite obsessed with the bodily functions involved. But the boy in this old postcard is certainly not Japanese. He is, of course, French!

Mooloolaba Beach scene Queensland

SCENE OVER MOOLOOLABA BEACH, Queensland

Mooloolaba is on the Queensland Sunshine Coast. At the time I took this photo (1990) I was not living permanently in Queensland but since then I have moved there.

My present home is north and inland from the Sunshine Coast area. We are about one hour from the many beautiful beaches in the area and from Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach (with its unique coloured sands) and Tin Can Bay.

Our house in in a town area but we have many trees and a host of birds of many varieties coming and going.

Masked Dragon Boat racers

MASKED DRAGON BOAT RACERS

Taken during dragon boat races held in Newcastle Harbour (NSW) in 1994. Various teams of bank and office workers, etc, get together each year to mark Australia Day - enjoying a fun day racing on the harbour. This group came up with something a little different by way of the eye masks which lent a special distinction to their group - irresistible to a photographer.

As an added bonus most of the girls taking part - in this and the other boats - were barefoot.
Girls in sack race

AN OLD FAVOURITE - THE SACK RACE

Taken at a primary school event in Newcastle around the year 1991. Not exactly an easy race to participate in - very easy to trip on the sack. And not a very easy one to photograph.
Chinese justice - prisoner in cangue

JUSTICE DISPENSED IN ANCIENT CHINA - The CANGUE

An old engraving of a scene in ancient China. The magistrate has confined a prisoner to the cangue - a cunning device that restricts movement. The cangue, which came in various forms, usually comprised two timber planks, with curved cutouts. The planks were locked around the prisoner's neck. He could not reach the lock to release himself and - as in this scene - had to be fed by a relative or some other well-meaning person. B& D enthusiasts today have modern versions of the cangue which are used in bondage play.

A different view of a school fete. Legs of girls waiting to go on jumping castle. Taken at St Catherine's School, Waverley (NSW) in 1988.
Yacht and water reflections

REFLECTIONS ON WATER

Just to demonstrate the fact I don't only take photographs of attractive barefoot young women - here is a photo of a yacht and interesting reflections on the surface of the water. Unfortunately it needs a large print size to show the reflections properly. Taken around the year 1988.

Woman whipped in public - Delaware

PUBLIC PUNISHMENT OF A WOMAN IN DELAWARE

An illustration from an old book, depicting the public punishment of a woman in the town square at Wilmington, Delaware. The woman's upper garment have been stripped off so that the whip can fall on her bared back.

Delaware, best known today as the place of registration of a myriad of business enterprises, was then a Puritan outpost and the severe moral code of the Puritans saw 'sinners' punished with heavy sentences.

In the mid-19th century there are three main whipping-posts - one at Dover, one at Georgetown, and one at Newcastle.  The whipping-post was considered by the local people the best penal institution in the country for the punishment of minor crimes. And equal opportunity applied - women were not spared.

Interestingly this State was the last to abandon the pillory, which it did only in 1905, and the last to abandon the flogging of criminals. In 1952 the last whipping took place when a man was flogged as punishment after he broke into a home and beat a woman, but it was not until 1972 that whipping was officially abandoned. In February 1990 it was reported that Delaware was to reintroduce whipping - for convicted drug dealers - but the bill later lapsed.
